This micro-credential and Level I Badge is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in and commitment to community and civic engagement, either through designated coursework or sustained volunteer experiences.

Program Overview

This Level I Badge includes courses that integrate meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.

You should pursue this micro-credential if:

  • You are an undergraduate or graduate student at Quinnipiac University

  • You take pride in building stronger communities

  • You are interested in service learning domestically or internationally

Program Dates and Details

Entry into this program occurs on a rolling basis and timeline for completion depends on your pace of work and schedule. Program dates and formats will vary as there are multiple avenues to earn this micro-credential and Level I Badge, including on-campus coursework and/or sustained experiences with thoughtful and comprehensive reflections. You will be able to formalize your learning schedule after declaring your intent to pursue the micro-credential.

Learning Outcomes

This micro-credential reflects a commitment to civic and community engagement. All learners who complete the required outputs will earn a Level I Badge.

  1. Earn a grade of C or better in two designated service learning courses with a completed reflection. Any coursework will count toward the completion of your undergraduate degree and be charged at the normal rate of tuition. 

  2. Alternatively, complete two sustained community or civic engagement experiences with a completed reflection. This may include:

    • Service learning trips through Alternative Spring Break, the Albert Schweitzer Institute trips or Global Solidarity

    • Global Public Health student placement

    • Sustained volunteer service in the community or on campus for at least one semester. Paid experiences will not be considered. 

Activities will be assessed by members of the Community and Civic Engagement committee using a standard rubric.

Required Reflection

In no more than 1,000 words, reflect on your experiences in community or civic engagement by responding to the following questions. Be sure to reference both of your service-learning courses and/or sustained community engagement projects, providing specific examples to illustrate your reflections.

  • How has your involvement in community or civic engagement shaped your understanding of your role within a community?

  • What kind of impact has your community or civic engagement had on the community you worked with? Please specify the community — Quinnipiac, local, national or international.

  • How might continuing your community or civic engagement help address broader issues such as societal structures, policies, human rights, social justice or sustainability?

All students who complete a micro-credential associated with academic credit or co-curricular experiences will receive a designation on their transcript and a digital badge through Credly. Micro-credential earners are encouraged to share their achievements on resumes, social media platforms and e-portfolios.

Learners can begin their pursuit of micro-credentials at any level; individuals who are new to the field are best suited for Participation or Level I badges, whereas experienced professionals might be more interested in advanced Level III Badges or Level IV Certifications.
