The School of Nursing Community Engagement Distinction micro-credential is awarded to learners who demonstrate the ability to build stronger, healthier communities by cultivating relationships, addressing health and wellness issues, preventing injury and violence, promoting health education and providing life-saving emergency treatment.

Program Overview

Community engagement is critical to the health and wellness of patient populations, especially when considering how socioeconomic and racial disparities affect health outcomes. By earning this Level I Badge, current undergraduate and graduate nursing students as well as Quinnipiac School of Nursing Alumni can demonstrate their proficiency to build partnerships, develop relationships and implement community-focused health promotions that maximize outcomes for vulnerable communities.

You should pursue this micro-credential if:

  • You are a Quinnipiac nursing student or nursing alumni

  • Your career and curricular aspirations would benefit from experiential learning opportunities in vulnerable communities

Program Dates and Details

This program requires a minimum of 70 hours to complete. Time to completion will depend on the ability of students to attend mandatory community events, complete self-paced online modules and finalize reflections and poster presentations.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Complete the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce Population Health Course. This online, self-paced course serves as a primer for nurses, nursing students and other healthcare providers to expand their knowledge of Population Health and transform their approach as to how patients and clients are cared for within the community.
  2. Attend at least four pre-approved community events and complete a self-reflection for each one:
    • Stop the Bleed® (STB) Hemorrhage Control
    • Narcan Administration (intranasal)
    • Epi Pen Administration
    • Safe Storage of Firearms Education and Distribution of Gun Locks and Gun Safes
    • Gun Buyback Program
    • Cardiovascular Health / EKG Screening
    • Bicycle Safety
    • Community CPR and AED Training
  3. Complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) This  competency is required for all faculty and students involved in research (~4 hours). The CITI platform hosts the online training modules for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) including applicable laws, rules and guidelines to ensure research is conducted honestly, accurately and ethically.
  4. Present a poster on your experience during Nurses' Week

 

Objectives:
  • Demonstrate expected proficiency in performance of evidence-based clinical skills, use of clinical experts and consideration of individual and population preferences in providing nursing care related to:
    • Community and public health nursing.
    • Information literacy and patient care technologies used in the community.
    • Health teaching and health counseling.
    • Health promotion and wellness. 

Assessment of completion of micro-credential requirements is completed by a committee of faculty experts evaluating learners artifacts aligned with a rubric.

All students who complete a micro-credential associated with academic credit or co-curricular experiences will receive a designation on their transcript and a digital badge through Credly. Micro-credential earners are encouraged to share their achievements on resumes, social media platforms and e-portfolios.

Learners can begin their pursuit of micro-credentials at any level; individuals who are new to the field are best suited for Participation or Level I badges, whereas experienced professionals might be more interested in advanced Level III Badges or Level IV Certifications.
